TO MY HEROES: This page is dedicated to all my friends and family who helped make this ride possible through their generous donations to the Arthritis Foundation. I'd also like to thank my family for putting up with my extended absence during this ride. They must also be thanked for coming to welcome me back at the end of the ride. OK, since we're in a thanking mode, I must also thank them for being independent and patient enough to let me ride like a free spirit on my countless "training" (read: FUN) bike rides every week over our lifetimes together. |

Summary
of the 2005 Ride |
|
Why are there
so many pictures Jackie Kuhn is an old friend of mine and a very good friend of my wife, Katie. Jackie is responsible for getting everyone you see in the picture below to do this ride. She contacted Pam Mudd and me for her fundraising effort. We each chipped in, but also thought, "we want to go, too!" Pam then lured her husband Dennis and her old friend Woody Woods into the ride. I have a lot of pictures of Jackie in my photo album because she and I rode together for over half the ride. Woody and the Mudds rode with us on some days, and zipped ahead on others. On a few days I had to get my macho ya-yas out by zipping ahead, too. But it was very fun having Jackie and others to talk to for most of the ride. From left to right: Dan, Jackie Kuhn, Pam [Evans] Mudd, Dennis Mudd, Woody Woods. Thanks, Jackie, for getting us all involved in the fundraising and this great ride! And finally...The 2005 Tour of Hope Finale... I delayed sending out a link to my pictures because I thought I would be able to share pictures from another ride the weekend after we finished the Coast Classic. On October 8th, 2005, the Tour of Hope cancer fundraising ride's final stage was to ride from Columbia MD into Washington DC with Lance Armstrong. Unfortunately, the final leg of that ridethe only part I was going to participate inwas canceled due to heavy rain and flooding. Here's the only shot I got of Lance Armstrong, trying to stay dry under a canopy in the morning rain after the ride was canceled (it was so dark that the other shots were even worse): The ride cancellation gave me more time to be with my wife Katie and her sister Cissy Glading in Bethesda. Cissy has been battling cancer since the spring of 2005. Get well, Cissy!!
Footnote: Katie's sister Lauren died of cancer in 1995. |

Dear Baltimore-DC Fundraising Ride rider:
First and foremost, thank you for your commitment to the cancer cause
and the 2005 Bristol-Myers Squibb Tour of Hope. Through your
fundraising efforts, more than $1.4 million was raised to support cancer
research and clinical trials. All of the funds will go to the Lance
Armstrong Foundation.
We regret the cancellation of the Washington, DC events, and appreciate
your understanding. Local authorities deemed conditions unsafe due to
flooding on the area roadways and the potential of high winds. It was
a difficult decision for the ride organizers in consultation with the
local authorities, but your safety was paramount. The fundraising ride
will not be rescheduled, primarily due to the logistics of route
permitting.
We rescheduled a smaller celebration for the Tour of Hope National
Team, their friends and family, and the Baltimore †DC fundraising
riders
at the JW Marriott on Saturday afternoon. However, there was an
overwhelming response among people who wanted to attend and the venue quickly
reached capacity. Some individuals were subsequently turned away by
hotel security officials in accordance with fire marshal codes. We are
sorry if you were unable to gain access to the event at the JW Marriott
and regret any disappointment this may have caused.
All registered riders will receive t-shirts in the mail within the next
two weeks. Further, those of you who qualified for fundraising prizes
will receive them in the mail as well.
For those riders who have not yet returned your transponder chips, they
must be returned in a bubble-wrap envelope and have "hand cancel"
written on the envelope so the chips don't fall out when they are put
through a machine. You will receive a bubble-wrap envelope in the mail with
your t-shirt. They should be sent to Mike Marion, 134 Woodbrook Drive,
Midway Park, NC 28544.
Once again, your efforts in raising funds for cancer research are very
much appreciated, and we hope you will continue to support the Tour of
Hope, its partners, and our collective mission to raise awareness about
cancer clinical trials.. .
Sincerely,
Bristol-Myers Squibb Tour of Hope Staff
